What this practice is
From assistants to operators.
The first wave of enterprise AI was assistive—a model behind a chat box, answering when asked. The agentic wave is different. Agents take action: they query systems of record, execute multi-step work, and account for themselves to a human and to an audit trail.
Architecting for this wave is not a UX exercise. It is the design of a runtime: the boundary, the tools, the policy substrate, the observability layer, and the human checkpoints that make autonomy something the enterprise can actually defend.
The interesting question stopped being “can the model answer?” It became “can the agent act—inside policy, on real systems, with an audit trail that holds?”

Every tool call is a trust decision. We model what each tool can read, write, and invoke before a line of agent code is written. Least privilege is the starting posture, and the boundary is version-controlled, reviewed, and tied to the governance record.
Policy substrate & checkpoints
Rules encoded where they can be enforced—not in a prompt—plus explicit human checkpoints for confirmation, review, and escalation.
We encode constraints at the harness layer through pre-execution checks, runtime guardrails, and post-execution reconciliation. Human authority is an architectural decision with clear criteria for when an agent proceeds and when it stops.
Observability & audit
Every action, tool call, and policy decision captured in a form an auditor can read and an engineer can debug.
Structured traces correlate model invocations, tool use, policy decisions, and outcomes by run ID. The compliance view and the engineering view share one evidence record, making accountability a first-class system output.
